How can staff support my child?
Most staff are trained in basic first aid, and some have advanced training for specific conditions like diabetes or epilepsy. Support may be provided in the classroom, during breaks, lunch, and PE lessons.
How do I inform the school of a medical condition?
At the beginning of your child's education journey, please inform the school of any medical needs. This helps determine if an IHCP is required. Not every pupil needs a plan, but the relevant form must be signed and returned promptly.
Schools may need proof from a healthcare professional to create an IHCP, ensuring accurate information is gathered. Contact the school anytime if your child needs a Care Plan or if there are medical changes the school should know about.
What is an Individual Health Care Plan?
Individual Health Care Plans (IHCP) are designed for students with ongoing medical conditions like asthma, allergies, and diabetes. They aim to:
- Provide reassurance to pupils and families that the school is aware of their medical condition.
- Ensure the school can support the medical condition effectively.
- Administer appropriate medication when needed.
- Allow pupils to feel safe and enjoy their time at school.
IHCPs are created in collaboration with pupils, parents or carers, and healthcare professionals. These plans are reviewed annually, and any medical changes should be communicated to the school office as soon as possible.
Note: For short-term medication (like for tonsillitis or ear infections), a Care Plan is not necessary, but a form must be completed at the school office for medication to be administered.
